Gel polish should provide a smooth, glossy and long-lasting finish. However, when it begins lifting around the edges or peeling away after only a few days, it can be frustrating for both the nail technician and the client.

Although peeling and lifting are often described as the same problem, there is a slight difference between them.

Lifting usually starts in a particular area, such as around the cuticle, sidewalls or free edge. A small gap begins to form between the gel and the natural nail.

Peeling normally happens when a larger section of gel comes away from the nail plate, sometimes in an almost complete sheet.

The two problems are closely connected and often have the same underlying causes. These can include incomplete nail preparation, oil or moisture on the nail, incorrect product application, insufficient curing or unsuitable client aftercare.

Before replacing products or assuming that the gel polish is faulty, it is important to identify where the lifting started and review each stage of the application.


1. Cuticle left on the nail plate

One of the most common causes of gel polish lifting is incomplete cuticle preparation.

Even after the visible cuticle has been pushed back, a thin layer of non-living tissue can remain attached to the nail plate. If gel is applied over this tissue, it is bonding to the cuticle rather than directly to the natural nail.

As the cuticle moves or separates, the gel polish can begin lifting with it.

During preparation:

  • Gently push back the cuticle.
  • Carefully remove non-living tissue from the nail plate.
  • Pay particular attention to the corners and sidewalls.
  • Remove all dust before applying any nail products.

Preparation should be thorough but gentle. Excessive filing or scraping can thin and damage the natural nail, creating further adhesion problems.

2. Oil, moisture or dust on the nail

Before the appointment, clients should avoid applying hand cream or cuticle oil immediately before their service.

After preparing the nail:

  1. Remove all visible filing dust.
  2. Cleanse the nail using a lint-free wipe.
  3. Apply the recommended nail dehydrator or preparation product.
  4. Avoid touching the prepared nail plate with fingers.

3. Gel polish touching the skin

Gel polish should not touch the cuticle, sidewalls or surrounding skin.

When product floods into the cuticle area, it cannot bond correctly to the nail plate. Once the gel cures, movement of the skin can begin pulling the product away from the nail.

This commonly creates a pocket of lifting around the cuticle.

Use controlled, thin applications and leave a small, neat margin between the product and the skin. If uncured gel touches the skin, remove it completely before placing the hand inside the lamp.

Do not cure flooded product and then attempt to file around it afterwards. The affected area should be cleaned and reapplied correctly.

4. Applying gel polish too thickly

Gel polish is designed to be applied in thin, controlled coats. When the application is too thick, the light from the lamp may not penetrate the product evenly. The surface can appear cured while the gel underneath remains soft or insufficiently cured.

Thick application can result in:

5. Incorrect curing time or lamp

Gel polish does not simply dry inside a nail lamp. It undergoes a chemical curing process that depends on the correct combination of product, light output and curing time.

A lamp that switches on is not automatically suitable for every gel system.

Problems can occur when:

  • The lamp is not compatible with the gel product.
  • The curing time is too short.
  • The client’s hand is positioned incorrectly.
  • The thumb is outside the effective curing area.
  • The lamp has damaged or weakened LEDs.
  • The product has been applied too thickly.
  • The underside or edges of the nail are not receiving sufficient light.

Whenever possible, use the lamp recommended by the gel manufacturer and follow the specified curing time for each layer.

6. Mixing incompatible products

It can be tempting to combine a base coat from one brand, a colour from another and a third-party lamp. Sometimes this appears to work, but different products may have been formulated and tested as part of their own system.

Differences in formulation, curing requirements and flexibility can affect adhesion.

When troubleshooting repeated lifting, return to a complete system wherever possible:

  • Preparation product
  • Base coat
  • Gel colour
  • Top coat
  • Recommended lamp

Using a matched system makes it easier to follow the correct application instructions and identify which stage may be causing the problem.

It also avoids assuming that every gel polish requires the same preparation or curing routine.


7. The free edge has not been properly covered

Lifting and chipping at the tip of the nail are often connected to the free edge.

During application, check that the base coat, colour and top coat provide neat and even coverage across the edge of the nail, following the instructions for the product system being used.

The coating should remain thin. A bulky ridge at the end of the nail can create another weak point and may make the manicure more likely to chip.

The natural nail should also be shaped smoothly. Rough corners or layers of peeling nail can prevent the product from forming a secure seal.

Clients who frequently type, open packaging, clean or use their nails as tools may experience more wear around the free edge.


8. The natural nail is weak, damaged or peeling

Gel polish can only bond as securely as the surface underneath it.

If the natural nail is severely peeling, thin or damaged, layers of the nail plate may separate while the gel remains attached to them. This can make it appear as though the gel polish itself has failed.

Repeated aggressive buffing, picking off old gel and scraping the nail during removal can weaken the nail plate over time.

If the nail moves and flexes while the cured coating remains comparatively rigid, the movement can cause the product to crack or separate at the free edge and sidewalls.

A client with thin, flexible nails may need a different base product or additional structure rather than repeated layers of colour gel.

However, more product is not always the answer. The selected system needs to suit the condition, length and flexibility of the natural nail.

Record which products were used during each appointment. This makes it easier to compare wear and adjust the service at the next visit.


10. Aftercare and everyday habits

A well-applied manicure can still be affected by the way the nails are treated after the service.

Frequent exposure to water, cleaning chemicals and physical pressure can contribute to premature wear. Picking at a small lifted area can also turn minor lifting into complete peeling.

Advise clients to:

  • Wear gloves when cleaning or washing up.
  • Avoid using their nails to open containers or remove labels.
  • Apply cuticle oil regularly after the service.
  • Avoid picking, biting or peeling the gel.
  • Book professional removal when the manicure needs replacing.
  • Contact their nail technician if lifting develops.

Cuticle oil should be used as part of aftercare, but it should not be applied immediately before a new gel service unless it will be thoroughly removed during preparation.

How the location of lifting can identify the cause

The place where the problem begins can provide useful clues.

Lifting around the cuticle

This may indicate incomplete cuticle preparation, product touching the skin or gel being applied too close to the cuticle.

Lifting along the sidewalls

Check for remaining cuticle tissue, product flooding, incorrect filing or areas that may have been missed during preparation.

Chipping or lifting at the free edge

Look at the client’s nail length, flexibility, daily habits and product coverage at the tip.

Peeling away in a complete sheet

This may be connected to hand positioning inside the lamp, client habits or particular nails being used more heavily during daily tasks.

Problems affecting every nail

When most or all nails peel or lift at a similar time, review the complete preparation, product and curing process.

A gel polish troubleshooting checklist

Before assuming that the product is faulty, check the following:

  • Was all non-living cuticle removed from the nail plate?
  • Was the nail clean, dry and free from oil?
  • Did anyone touch the nail after preparation?
  • Did any product contact the surrounding skin?
  • Were the layers thin and even?
  • Was the correct base coat used?
  • Was the lamp compatible with the gel system?
  • Was every layer cured for the recommended time?
  • Was the client’s hand correctly positioned?
  • Was the free edge evenly covered?
  • Is the natural nail weak, flexible or damaged?
  • Has the client followed the recommended aftercare?

Changing several parts of the process at once can make the problem more difficult to identify. Adjust one stage at a time and keep clear service notes for future appointments.


When lifting may be more than an application problem

Itching, redness, swelling, blistering or irritation around the nails should not be treated as ordinary product lifting.

Stop using the product and avoid applying additional gel over the affected area. The client should seek advice from a GP or qualified healthcare professional, who may refer them for dermatological assessment or patch testing where appropriate.

Contact allergy cannot be confirmed simply by looking at the nail or skin. The NHS and British Association of Dermatologists explain that patch testing may be used by dermatology services to identify a suspected contact allergen.
